A MONK'S CRIME.

THEFT OF CHURCH VALUABLES. By Cable —Press Association —Copyright. London, October 9. Macoch, the monk who was arrested on a charge of murdering his brother and eloping with the widow, was responsible, the Austrian police believe,'for the robbery from the Church of the Holy Mother at Czenstochova, Poland, on October 22nd last, of the diamond crown, dress and votive offerings, valued at £IOO,OOO, from the famous image of the Virgin, which has been worshipped all over Poland for 500 years. The image, to which miraculous powers are ascribed, has been at Czenstochova since 1382. According to tradition, it is the work of St. Luke, and consists of a painting in cyprus wood. It once belonged to the mother of Constantine the Great. The votive offerings stolen were the gifts of the myriads of pilgrims who have visited the church during the past six centuries. A few months ago they were recovered and restored, amidst great popular rejoicings,. and with remarkable thanksgiving ceremonials.
