i BARQUE'S ROUGH EXPERIENCES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Westport, October 10. The German barque Martha Rockhahn has arrived from Buenos Ayres after a pissage of 56 days. She had a very rough trip nearly all the way, with hail squalls, hurricanes and terrific seas. On September 10 Captainl Bun was swept from the deck by a! great wave, but managed to save nim-j self by catching hold of life lines. Rails and other deck fittings were smashed. THE GAMBLING BILL. Dunedin, Yesterday. > The Baptist Union this morning passed a resolution urging amendraentb to the Gaming Bill, now before the House, so as to absolutely prohibit, under the heaviest penalties, the operation of bookmakers at races and other sports gatherings. I WOOL PROSPECTS. j Dunedin, October 10. ' Mr. J. 0. Price, of J. N. Swift and Co., who has been interviewed with regard to the Bradford and Continental wool markets, says that English sales did not feel the slump which was expected as the result of the absence of American competition. The position was saved by the solid English and Continental demand from spinners. The prospects are that this demand will continue, but New Zealand growers must not expect the inflated values obtained at last season's sales in the Dominion, since to all appearances the demand will be regulated by trade requirements and not by the risk of speculation. WAIHI MINERS AND THE ARBITRATION ACT. Wellington, Yesterday. The Waihi Miners' Union decided, by 43 to 277 votes, to cancel their registration under the Arbitration Act. The votes in favor are considerably short of the majority of members of the union, but it is understood that application willj be made to the registrar' for cancellation in order to test the question decided by ballot that when the funeral of anv member who dies as the result of accident takes place, all members shall cease work for three shifts.
