Equitas and Golden Slipper have been scratched for the Craven Plate. Golden Slipper has also been scratched for the Sydney and Suburban Handicaps. ■RANDWICK TRAINING NOTES. Melbourne, October 4. Alawa did a mile in lmin oOsec, Flavian and Thistle Brook covered a milt in lmin 50sec, Dhobi nine furlongs m 2 min, 01 waster did 11 furlongs in 2min 50sec, Eye Glass a mile in lmin 51sec. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa"). The Hawke's Bay and Marlborough spring meetings open to-day and will be concluded on Thursday. The first race at Hastings each day is timed to start at 12.30. Weights for the Wellington spring meeting should appear about Friday. Kilostere looked like winning the Moutoa Hack Handicap on Saturday, but the last furlong, just found him out. The bay cold should soon run out of hacks. Reported from Hastings that Bliss put up a marvellous mile gallop on Friday morning last. F. Carmont appears to have got the Renown gelding Celebrity in rattling form again and the neddy will sport silk at the "Marlborough meeting. The Birkenhead filly Falsetto can travel verv fast for five furlongs, but she I dwelt on the mark each day at WangaIjiui, and b" the time she got into her I stride the leaders were a furlong away. Four first favorites. Countermine, Golden Loop, Lady Medallist and Electrakoff won races on Saturday. The Bar Vons could have done no good on that day. Hardly without exception, the bookmaker offered better prices—straight-out or first-and-second—than the totalisator at Wanganui. Horses that only returned about £2 on the "mill" stood at 3's and 4's with the loud-voiced fraternity, and in a certain stick event one might easily have secured three times the price returned on the totalisator. Trainer C. Pritchard has his team in good order, and with Penza, Rongomai and Lares he should not return emptyhanded from Blenheim this week. Dreadless was one of the unfortunates at Wanganui. Each day he made the pace very torrid for six furlongs and was only shaken off in the last bit in both his races. Dreadless will carry 8.9 in tjhe. Flying Handicap at Hastings. Auckland papers state that Mr. J. Ryan, one-time owner of Nonette, purchased North-East after the Avondale meeting for 600 guineas. North-East has been a good horse to Mr. McManaway, who secured him for about 30 or 40 sovs. Oxton is galloping well and will probaibly ibe given a run in the Pakowhai Hurdles at Hastings, in which he will carry top-weight. Lady Medallist's time for tlhe Higgle Handicap, 2.10, has only been beaten once. That was by Mr. Sid "Pitt's Rustique, wiho won in 2.9 l<-5 in HM>6. Recent winners were Irish Rifle, All Redi and Lady Lucy, and the race always attracts a good class of horse. iSandstream has been showing his connections some good gallops at Hastings and will probably measure strides with Kopu and Sir Tristram in the King Edward Handicap to-day. Rangihaeta ran promisingly at Avondale, and his connections brought him down to Napier. The jumper is said to be in good fettle and is engaged in both hack and open stick events at the meet-. Tribulation • has filled out nicely and is a fine-looking three-year-old. In the Wanganui Guineas he ran a good race. In fact, at the distance he looked a likely winner. He will be meeting Danube on 71bs better terms in the Hawke's Bay Guineas, and that' should bring the pair closer together'. Tribulation, with a 71b penalty, wall have to carry 9.7 in the Hack Scurry at Hastings to-day. If started, Mr. Bidwill's colt will carry a lot of good money. For winning the Wanganui Guineas Danube will have to put up 71i>s extra in the Hawke's f |Bay Guineas to-morrow. Elysian carried a 51b penalty last year whpn he won, and a few pounds extra do not make much difference to a good horse when he is well. In Danube Mr. G. D. Greenwood has a fine three-year-old and with ordinary luck a fair share of forthcoming w.f.a. races should come his way I this season. Waikaraka jumped well each day at] Wanganui. and, with ordinary luek, may be returned a winner over hurdles very shortly. Napier Park weights are due on Friday next. Golden Loop. Master Laddo and Attention dropped out of the Moutoa Hack Handicap, leaving eleven to sport silk. A first day's winner, Cheddar, carried most coin and Shuja and Mallet were next in demand. This was the finest race of the day. Kilostere showed out first but was soon joined by Tarn Glen and St. Lumsden. Cheddar joined the leader before entering the home stretch and the pair raced neck and neck all the way up the straight. Fifty yards from home Cheddar was in front and was being hailed' as w inner when First Battery and Mallet dashed up on the outside,'Shuja came up on the rails, and a great battle ensued. Six horses rushed past the post locked together, and the crowd held i its breath till the numbers went up. Mr. Hartgill didn't keep them long waiting. He placed First Battery, Mallet and Cheddar in that order—a nose between first and second and a head between second and third. Kilostere, Shuja and Sfe. Lumsden were only a matter of inches away. It was a great race. Clemora did not take on the Marangai Handicap and Eleetrakoff was a warm order. As usual, Dreadless got out first { and the cerise jacket was wull elear of everything along the back. The favorite drew up to within striking distance before the straight was reached, and Making his run at the distance won very

handily 'by 'half a length. The Lark was a couple of lengths away third and then came Swimming Belt, Lethean and Master Lnddo. The following is the list of winning owners at Wnnganui:—G. D. Greenwood £4-15, J. H. Prosser £lO5, W. Da vies £l7O, Sir Ceo. Clifford £l4O, Hon. J. D. Ormond £135, J. R. McDonald £125, A. Gordon £125, G. Castle £125, R. C. Price £IOO, E. J. Watt £95, T.
