BOWLING
WEST END CLUB.
There was a good attendance of memibers at the first annual meeting of .the 'West End Bowling Club, wilich was held in the Municipal Chambers last night. Mr. J. D. Sole, president of the club, occupied the chair. The annua; report set out that since the contract > for levelling and: forming •tihe green was . let on April 2!), and the formation of a members' working bee to lay the green, the results have been been'excellent. The green will be ready for playing on early in November. The quality of the turf is excellent, and Mr. jjvmehs, thie contractor, is thanked for efficient work. The m.inibership of the club is 57, including 14J affiliated and' six 'honorary. A number of the club's debentures have taken up, and it is hoped that members will take up the remainder in order to ensure the carrying out of tihe work still necessary. The Xeii" Plymouth Club is thanked for able assistance and Mr. Brownie for ihis liberal treatment in regard to the pavilion. 'Mr. W. W. Sroitib is also thanked for his ex- | pert adivk*e in connection with the laying out of the green. The report specially | thanks the secretary (Mr. H. J. Hobbs) for the energy and skill he has used ! in the interest of the chih.
The balarore-shert showed receipts had amounted to £lB6 3s, the principal items behw mc-mbers' subscriptions £B7 3s and debentures £96. The expenditure had amounted to £.144 6s 4:1, principally in ■connection with the new green, leaving a balance in hand of £4l 16s Bd.
In moving the adoption of the report, the president referred to the splendid manner in whicih 'the committee 'had assisted hiim. They had turned up regularly, .taken their coats off and got to wloric. He also referred to the fact that against the balance shown they had lief--biKties estimated! at £loo.—Mr. H. J. Gilbert seconded the motion, which was carried without discussion., members evidently appreciating tihe work done by those in change of affairs.
Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr. J. D. (Stole; vice-presidents, ■Messrs A. R. Standish and W. Bigelow; treasurer, Mr. G. A. Coraev; secretary, Mr. H. J. Hobbs. For the committee there were nine nominations and the following were elected:—Messrs Reale, Lee, Ellerm, Francis, Lepine and Martin. It was decklied that all new members ibe baMotted for 'by the committee and also that the niuim;ber of playing members be limited to 100. It was resolved to open the green on Thursday November 'll7. The secretary, in response to a query, informed members that it would be ready by that date without any 'doubt. Any mieimlber whose subscription is in
arrears by November 2.0 will not be allowed to play until such time as the subscription is paid. Tihe selection of a green committee was left in the hands of tfoe committee. Votes of thaiiiks wiere aeccirJed to M'&ssr.s Sole, Hoyden, Ellerm and Lepine for presentation of forms, and Mr. Smytlie for a -table.
Mr. Oovet't, at the invitation of the president, made a few remarks. He stated tiliat lire Iliad recently visited the 'green, and 'was surprised at what had been done. The chub had certainly progressed very fast and were fortunate in taviiinigi the whale green turfed. He advised the committee not to fall into the error, of towing too many competitions, which he did not consider beneficial to the general play. He also gave the club some useful adrvice, and in conclusion bandied the secretary a donation of £1 Is towards its funds.
Mr. Deare's offer to donate a trophy for competition was accepted with thanks.
The usual votes of thanks terminated the jneeting.
