TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The Wangauui Spring meeting will be concluded to-day. ■ -Golden 1/oop cast punters a heap of coin on Thursday. The starting at Wanganui was very poor, and in several instasqes. ,-the jockeys started themselves.:, , It is reported that the ctQ.wd behind St. Tomey "placed" nearly a .century on their horse in the Putiki Hack Race. ,

The Wanganui horseman,. "Bronco : Coleman, rode two winners on Thursday. Paritutu got off first in the Okehu Hurdles, and led for a couple of furlongs. Then he faded right out of tht contest.

The "guns" went for Mon Ami in tht Flying, and the little black mare got out first and led to the distance, but when Faunus tackled her she turned ii up at once. Emblem was best supported, after Faunus and Mon Ami, in the Flying, but she was turned the other way when the barrier lifted and took no part in the race.

Cheddar is a nice rack-looking brown gelding, with an intelligent head, ana he finished up gamely under the whip in the Maiden.

Falsetto was left nearly a hundred yards in the Maiden, and then finished close up, in fifth place. If he had goi away smartly he would have run second, if not first. Euroco was paying a hatful in iiiik race, and made ft bold bid for vict-ry, just missing second plaqe by a neck. Eastwind can fly for four furlong, I'uv after that she quickly comes back to the field. What a beauty Danube is. Three finlongs from home his Guineas cbnnce looked hopeless, but he came up purely under the flail, and got his h >ad h\ front in the last fifty yards. He is every inch a racehorse, and there h rc doubt about his gameness. War Song was jumping )ut of liib skin before the Guineas, and lor about j four furlortgs he carried Soiute alo-.ij at a great pace. The mila was T| in in lmin. 442 l-osec., so there vis r.o waitin" on the'journey. Somite receded at the last moment through a report being -.irculatel thai all was not well with his forelegs. There could not have been much the mattei with the colt, however, for he battled it right out gamely to the bitter end, and ran a really fine race. In fact the Guineas was the prettiest race of the day and the most exciting. Birkdale was running well up for live furlongs, but quickly shot lws bolt.; Dearest was unfortunate at the start, and never races well behind the field. Wimmera was made the medium of a big "pun" by the wise men of the Turf on Thursday. They closed t>he pencillers up in a very short time, am then went up on tihe stand to Bee the

horse win. Despite his big had, the Men-wee gelding was soon in front, and u U P the slight the first time. Another Century Hurdles," his backers cabled,it. At the fence in front 01 the , stand he hit heavily, and nearly came on his nose, C. Cress making a ' smart recovery. Along the back-lie struck again, and four furlongs home the favorite started to go back. Tsui- : ■ira came through very fast, and held a . ' tead entering the straight, win- j «mg half a length from Xavier.' It cotrM not bp said with any shadow' of truth that Jockey E. Murtagh, horsemanship on the runwer-ttp, Xavier. In the last two fur-| W-'horse was galloping two to | r| " U jul'ii tie ' an( l -"witih another ten' V • M go would haye won, ' What Bl " is re P orted to have said af-1 ter'OT/r race could only be written in scan'et;, .on asbestos. ■ i ftWitogh heaten, Waitapu was by no meSW'disgraced, and he probably'gall(me<i faster in the Okehu Hurdles than 'lre ever did before. Waitapu was* close up at the finish, .and the race was run 'in'Hhe fast time of 3min 16sec.. Wai-I tapu ran 3.18 before leaving home, and . ■hisi 1 connection® thought that good eliough to win. '." TJib Hack Hurdle Race was the tamest affair this scribe has witnessed for many a-day! The favorite, Te Whetu, 1 • was in the lead from start to finish, andj the others appeared to be afflicted with! the tired feeling'whch never won any-1 thing. Kotare has now run four- thirds.

" St, Toney is the prad which was- sup- ' posed to stop to nothing after- going " four furlongs. The crowd expected him U) come back in the 'Piifciki -Haek< Race on Thursday, but the farther they went ■ the easier he appeared to be "going. The six furlongs were thrown behind in 1.15, which is a, good "go? for backs. AH Blue was "hot stuff/'but her chance | went up witih l the barrier. • She >is a fine mover, and should repay watching. Valentine came very fast "at the finish, and just finished outside a place. 1 i The Spring Handicap resolved itself) into a duel between Clemora and. Dreadless. This paid cleared right out from) I the others along the back, and were go-l iiilg at a great pace until two furlongs from home, where Dreadless cried enough; and the Taranaki horse was left to come on and score comfortably | with a great Tattle in the last furlong, j Lethean was placed third, and was.,one ■ of a bunch whioh included Coronetted and three or fotir others. Coronetted' was slow to leave the ijnark, and was' never closer up tliauaaxth.
