Addressing, the Fishmongers' Company in London recently, Sir James OrichtonBrowme, the well-known authority on health, declared that the best way to check the deterioration of the British race was to give people fish to eat. As far as the Navy was concerned, Sir James said, he would make fish-eating compulsory, and would have Government-con-trolled fish farms in every seaport. Mr; Carman, who .'has ibeen secretary and treasurer of the Ettham Bowling Club for the last seven- years, has resigned' owing to pressure of private business. During the. period of his secretarial position the club has not lost a shilling m subscriptions. The working account of the club will commence the season with a debit balance of 9s lOd, and only £6O outstanding on the pavilion. A serious accident happened to a lady resident in one of the city suburbs the other day. She was engaged in cooking, and utilising a gas stove for 'the purpose. The gas (had evidently been turned on in the oven for some time, and when the lady struck a match and opened the oven door there was an explosion, the force of which sent her reeling through the doorway. Her blouse caught on fire, her face and hands were burned, and she sustained a severe shock: What are regarded as promising indications of coal haveibeen.foufld.by the syndicate that is prospecting on a farm at Paeo. The bore is now down* about 289 r feet, and latterly a black ( substance that appears like coal has been discovered. Probably the syndicate will have this substance tested at the Thames School of Mines. Tt has been well known (says the Westport Times) that for some years there has been large deposits of block sand on the ocean beach north of the Karamea river, extending as far as the Nine Mile Bluff. These sands are more or less auriferous, and in prospecting in the vicinity lately, Messrs Sfcejmart and party have discovered about Bft .thick l of black sand, containing gold, but not payable by ordinary methods of working, but which would yield a good return under the hydraulic elevation or blow-up system. George Jonathon, aprominent business man in Kawhia, with the object of furthering several" objects for the advancement of that district. Jonathon has been appointed to wait upon the council of the Wellington Cnamber of Commerce, principally for the purpose of urging the importance of a railway between Kawhia and the Main Trunk line; Many Kawhia people are anxious that there showld, be direct trade rela* tions between iheir d'j&s% arid Wellington. A number of Wellington men have acquired large properties in the district, and are expending considerable sums 'in improving them. As .chairman of the Kawhia Town Board and a member of the Kawhia County Council, Mr. Jonathon intends to interview the Government relative to certain local works of an urgent character before he returns to his home.
