THOUSAND CANDIDATES FOR SCHOLARSHIPS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Yesterday. "The thirst for free education is almost ns great as the thirst for alcohol," remarked Mr. Parr at the education iboard meeting to-day when the matter of the forthcoming scholarship examinations was mentioned. He caid he was very glad to see that there were nearly a thousand young people anxious for free places, and he dare say most would get them. It was an excellent thing, hut where the finance was going to finish up he did not know. The Minister of Education had begun to feel the pinch, and hml suggested that hoards should come to his assistance by rating themselves, but that system did not find faT»r.
