A THIEF WARNED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, September 28. By Mr. Justice Williams this morning John O'Brien, alias Moloney, with several Australian records for stealing, was sentenced to nine months' for theft ol overcoats from shop doors. His Honor regretted he had 110 power to deport prisoner to Australia. He warned prisoner if he was again convicted he would be returned to his country as an habitual oriminal for the rest of his life. ALDEGED BREACH OF AWARD. Napier, Yesterday. The Magistrate reserved judgment in a case in which the Inspector of Awards claimed £SOO from Messrs. Fernandos and Co., owner of the trawler Phantom, for a breach of the Act, which the inspector alleged constituted 'a lock-out. From the evidence' it appears that the. owners wanted the men to agree to work on shares, and r.s this was refused it was alleged the steamer was laid up and: work suspended. ALLEGED INTIMIDATION OF A TENANT. Wellington, Yesterday. Robert Russell, the owner of a house in the city, was committed for trial to-day on a charge of breaking and entering the house, which was occupied by his tenant, with intent to intimidate the occupants. Defendant's rent was overdue, and accused was endeavouring to obtain payment. Bail was allowed, accused in £SO, and one surety for a like amount. , BOOKMAKERS FINED. Christchurch, Yesterday. At the Magistrate's Court , this morning fourteen reputed bookmakers wert charged with having trespassed on Riccarton Racecourse at the time of the Grand National Meeting. Eleven were fined 40s each, 1 one 20s, one case was adjourned, and one dismissed. In tihe case of Matt. Livingstone, it was contended for the defence that accused had not been a bookmaker since April. He admitted that he had "backed horses since then, and had supplemented Mb income in that way. The Magistrate held that that came within the definition of a bookmaker, and convicted him. The' Act, says, "A bookmaker is a man who earns his living wholly or«in part by wagering or betting."
