Mr. E. Turner has been appointed head teacher of the Tataraimaka School, and will take up his duties on November 1 next. ®he Argus records the death of two well-known Elthain residents in Man. Rachael Preston, -wife of Mr. Jas. Preston, one of Elfchaan's pioneers; and Mr. Donald Morrison, who died with dramatic suddenness in the Eltham Hotel on Saturday. Mr. Morrison had bean a resident m the district for something like thirty years. Deceased was 71 and unmarried. A very old resident of Otahuhu (Auckland), in the person of Mir. Geo. Smith, passed away last Thursday even- J iiig, after a long illness, at the age of 88 years. Mr. Smith came to New Zealand 65 years ago, arriving at the Bay of Marnds in' the year 1845 with the 58th Regiment, to which he was attached. He took part in the Maori War, being present at several engageI ments. Fifty^two years ago, in file year 1858, he settled in Otahuhu, where he resided up to the time of his death. The deceased was esteemed for his kindly disposition and quiet, unassuming ways. He leaves a widow, four sons, and two daughters, to mourn their loss. In regard to future movements, Dr. Thacker, the sculler's backer, states that the champion has accompanied, Mr. Dreyer, a hunter of big game, who has gone with a span ofoxen a waggon about one hundred and twenty miles further up the river over the veldt Arnst expects to shoot leopards and other big game. The authorities have been very good, giving him a free hunting license, free railway passes, and other facilities for getting through the country. He retains his right to the cinematograph (pictures of the race as far as Australasia is concerned, but wishes to sell it to a picture proprietary. His ultimate object is to return to New Zealand and to live here.
