SOUTH BEATS NORTH. A MEMORABLE CONTEST. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christehureh, Last Night. After a memorable contest, marked, from (beginning to enid almost by the pace that kills and by brilliant combined forward and back play, the experimental South Island team to-day, at Lancaster Park, triumphed over the proved men of the North Island to the tune of 14 points to 10. The success' of the southerners was primarily due to the brilliant work of their forwards, who for the greater part of the game not only beatj the northern vanguard, but the backs as well. The game was entirely free from questionable incidents, and was noteworthy for the fact that not a man got Ihurt. The weather and ground conditions were ideal for football, and a fast and pleasurable game was witnessed by the 6000 spectators assembled. Francis captained the North (black), and Paton the South (white). Francis kicked off for the northerners, and the southerners immediately attacked, the Blacks having some narrow escapes, being forced several times'. Eventually Green secured and ended a brilliant run by scoring. He failed to convert. South 3, North nil. The southern forwards again had the northerners in trouble, and then up and down play ensued, both sides attacking dn (turn. Eventually, after some hot work on the northern citadel, Green scored his second try, Paton easily converting. South 'B, North 0. Shortly afterwards Paton kicked a penalty goal. South 11, North nil.
