LASCAR LABOUR

NEW NAVIGATION BILL. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Melbourne, September 23. In reference to the decision of the Australasian Federated Seamen's Union to ask the Dominion Government to legislate to compel all shipping companies trading to New Zealand to comply with the industrial conditions and rates of wages of New Zealand ships, or the alternative proposals that all local or Australian companies that conform to Australian industrial conditions should be subsidised, the Federal Attorney-Gen-eral states that the Navigation Bill now before the Senate ensures that all vessels engaged in the coastal trade must observe the same rates and industrial conditions as are observed by Australian ships.' The Bill does not provide that a subsidy 'be given in order to place local shipping companies in a better position than foreign-owned vessels, but all must conform to the Australian conditions.
