BOWRON BROS.
A HEAVY PENALTY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. On Friday last, Mr. H. W. Bishop, S.M., heard the appeal of Messrs. Bowron Bros, against the claim of the Commissioner of Taxes for taxation due on the sum of £64,972, being assessed income of the firm for the year 1905. The return sent in by the firm showed an assessable income of £18,836, and in respect of which they were convicted and fined £IOO for knowingly and wilfully making a false return. The Magistrate's decision was forwarded to the Department, which has now advised that the amount due by the firm for the year mentioned is £<5744 15s. This sum being treble the amount originally due shows that the amount short paid must have been £3248 ss. The firm is therefore fined in addition to £IOO, a sum' of £4496 for their breach of the law.
