A STEAMER BREAKS DOWN. Received September 10, 12.20 a.m. Sydney, Last Night. The steamer Kiltobranks was towed to port by the Guthrie, en route to the northern rivers. She had a cargo of sugar and timber. The machinery broke down on Friday, and she drifted at the mercy of the rough sea till the Guthriecame to the rescue. AN ACTOR DROWNED. Received September 18, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, Last Nis;ht. Arthur Edwards, actor, a member of the Arcadians Company, was drowned through the capsizing "of a boat in the harboT. QUEENSLAND HOSPITALS. Brisbane, September 17. A movement has been started to nationalise hospitals. The Home Secretary declared that if nationalisation was adopted every person in the community should be called upon to pay proportionately. GREAT EARTH SLIDE. Melbourne, September 17. An enormous landship at Trawool, 10 acres from a spur on the Tallarook ranges, came crashing down the hillside bodily with a thunderous roar. Several persons had narrow escapes. EARTH TREMORS. Sydney, September 17. . Several earth tremors in Sydney an J Melbourne have been recorded during the past week, but none of them were serious. GERMAN MEAT FAMINE. Received September 18, 5.5 p.m. Berlin, September 17. The municipality of Dresden has initiated a congress of German citifes to consider what steps are to be taken to deal with the meat famine.
