HARNESSING WAIKAREMOANA.
A WAIROA DEPUTATION. By Telegraph. —l J ress Association. Wellington, La«t Night A deputation of Wairoa (Hawke's Bay) residents waited on the Minister of Public Works to-night, to secure tht Government's approval in utilising a portion of the water power available from Lake Waikaremoana, in providing an electrical supply for that town. They said that whilst the necessity of prudence in preserving water power sources for development by the Government was recognised, the Wairoa liad a special claim to the use of Lake Waikaremoana, because of its isolation, and consequent expense of coal consuming plant for the pvoductkm of electricity. It kopea that the Government would peg out such of the supply as it would require, and ajlow the Wairoa municipality to utilise sufficient for its own require-' menta. The Hon. R. McKenzie replied that the question of the development of the water power of Lake Waikaremoana was to be brought up by a ibig deputation on Monday. An important aspect of the question was not so much the conserving of the power as the 'conserving of the market for it. If Wairoa, Hastings and other places were to clrop out with their own schemes, it would kill the whole proposal of the Government, which would be able to provide power to local bodies cheaper than they could do it by separate schemes. He could not say whether the scheme would be carried out this year or next, this depending on Parliament's authorisation.
