In the Senate the opponents of the Yass-Canberra site are making a strenuous At a, late hour the Government refused to adjourn the debate, and the opponents started to stonewall. The Government is hopeful of a ■win by a narrow margin. Melbourne, September 16. The division on Senator Givens' proposal to reduce the Yass-Canberra vote to £l, resulted in fifteen votes being given for and against. The amendment was /therefore negatived. < DESERT SITE SAFE. Received September 16, 10.30 p.m. Melbourne, September 16. The Senate sat till noon debating the question of the Federal Capital. < Mr.. Gardiner considered the Labor Senators were treacherous for speaking, against the Government's Bill. Others claimed that it was not a party matter. After the amendment was defeated, the whole subdivision was agreed to, with but one dissentient. -The Yass-Canberra site is now safe.
The Yass-Canberra site is, one would think, the worse that could be chosen. It is in a vast waterless, almost desert area, and is almost a level plain. Enormous sums must be spent in order to. obtain the ordinary services requisite for a great city. The site is almost totally devoid of natural beauties or facilities. The voting, of course, does not represent the feelings of the people of the Commonwealth on this important matter.
