UNIONIST SUCCESSES. GENERAL BOTHA DEFEATED. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Capetown, September 15. In the general elections the following results are announced:— Pretoria East. Sir Percy Fitzpatrick (Unionist) 1231, General Louis Botha (Premier) 1136. Pretoria West.—Mr. Smuts, Minister of the Interior, elected. Johannesburg (Georgetown). Sir George Farrar (Unionist) defeated Mr. Hull, Minister of Finance. Johannesburg! (Commissioner Street). —Mr, Thompson (Labour) elected. Blomfontein (urban). Christian Botha (Unionist). Capetown (4 seats). —Dr. Jameson and three other Unionists are elected.

SOME BIG SURPRISES. MANY BRITISH WINS. " Received September 16, 10.30 p.m. Capetown, September 16. Sir Percy Fitzpatrick's victory created the greatest excitement at Pretoria, Johannesburg, and Capetown. Sir Geo. J?arrar's figures are 1109, and Mr. Hull's 515. Unionists elected; Colonel Crewe fir East London, and Colonel Sir Aubrey Woolshampton for Braamfontein, Rand, Mr. Chaplin, Germiston, defeating Mr. Coward (Labor). Mr. J. W. Quinn, Toreyville .(Rand), defeated Mr. Mulligan (Nationalist). The Hon. H. A. Wyndham, Turflontein (Rand), defeatei W. J. Wyberg (Labor). Mr. Lionel Phillips, Yponville (Rand) defeated Sir Wm. Von Hulsteyn. •Mr. Patrick Duncan, Fordsburg (Rand), defeated Dr. Krause (Nationalist), .whose efforts during the war saved the Rand mines from destruction. Mr. Duncan's other opponents were a Laborite and a Socialist. General Botha, in a speech after the declaration of the poll, said he would still do. his utmost to kill'racialism in South Africa. iFor Jeppe, Transvaal, Mr. F. H. P. Cresswell, Australian mining engineer (Laborite), defeated Mr. R. Feetham. For Durban Central, Sir David Hunter, formerly manager of the Government railways-at Durban, beat Mr. Greyville R. Maydon,.an ex-Minister of Natal. Sir Percy Fitzpatrick, in a speech, said he sincerely hoped the outcome of the contest would. be peace and prosperity for South Africa, wherein, General Botha would play a leading part. Mr. J. W. S. Langerman (Nationalist), 2904,-was elected for Krugersdorp, defeating Abe Bailey, 1081.

•STATE OF THE PARTIES. Received September 17, 12.30 a.m. Capetown, September 16. Following is the state of parties at present:—Nationalists 34, Unionists 33, Laborites 2, Independents 6. FORECAST OF ELECTION. London, September 15. The Times' Johannesburg correspondent states that General Botha's Government is assured Of the greater or lesser majority. BOTHA IN DANGER. Capetown, September 16. Addressing four thousand electors at Capetown, Dr. Jameson said that the forces of reaction prevailed in Cabinet, and a strong Opposition was required to prevent Mr. Botha being overwhelmed by the Hertzog faction.
