TRADES UNION CONGRESS.
A LORD'S PRESENCE UNWELCOME.
By Cable—Press Association. —Copyright London, September 12.
I Five hundred delegates are present at j the Trades Union Congress at Sheffield. The Lord Mayor and Earl Fitzwilliam received them, and Earl Fitzwilliam acted as chairman. Four members' withdrew, protesting; against Earl ( Fitzwilliam's presence.
j The demonstration against Earl Fitzwilliam was in consequence of the recent threatened strike at his collieries. LOYALTY AND DISCIPLINE ( WANTED. ; Received September 14, 12.30 a.m. London, September 13. ' Mr. Haslam, Labor member for Chesterfield and President of the Trades Union Congress at Sheffield, in his opening address, emphasised the need of loyalty and discipline on the part of all concerned in the maintenance of the ■ vital principle underlying the trade union movement, namely, collective bargaining. Doubtless, delays occurred in ' the settlement of some minor difficulties, i but the breaking of agreements by inI dividual or sectional action was unjustiI fiable. They ought to expedite the set- ' tlement of disputes by means of proper .rules. The regulations referring to the Osborne judgment were hindering the 'work of the trades unions. The latter always ibelieved that one of their objects was to elect a trade unionist to the House of Commons, and the funds were accordingly applied for that purpose. Nothing short of reinstatement of the trade unions' position up to the time of the Osborne decision could be accepted.
