DISTRICT NEWS.

TIKORANGI. (From Our Own Correspondents.) The Clifton County Councillors, after shivering for some considerable time on the brink, have at last plunged into tile .sea of higher rates, and have also tacitly agreed to a self-denying ordinance by which the system, or rather the lack of system, that has hitherto obtained of individual councillors authorising work is to be put an end to. This is undoubtedly a step in the right direction, for it is evident that the fact of each member striving for expenditure in his own particular riding is, to a very great extent, responsible for the unhappy financial position in which the Council now finds itself. If the members strictly follow the course which they have set out they should soon regain for themselves, collectively, those functions of administration and control which they, with such disastrous results, have essayed to uso individually. I understand that the directors of the various dairy companies in and around the district are meeting at Waitara this week to consider the disposal of the season's output. The concert to be held on Thursday evening next promises to be a most successful affair, and, given a fine night, a record house is anticipated. The committee have provided a varied'arid interesting programme, and included in the party of vocalists from New Plymouth . are the Misses Fenton and Buckman and Miss Clarice Buckman. Mrs. A. George's orchestra has been engaged, and a farce by New Plymouth amateurs will also be given. The customary supper and dance is to follow.
