IMMIGRANTS BY THE ATHENIC. By Telegraph.—Presv Association. Wellington, Last Night. There were 430 passengers by the Athenic from London yesterday, of whom 338 were in the third class. Of the passengers, 55 (25 children) were nominated -by friends in New Zealand, and 32 were approved by the High Commissioner. All the immigrants were met by an official of the Immigration Department (Mr. Danby), Labour Department (Miss Bremner), and the Girls' Friendly Society and Church societies. The immigrants bring with them declared capital of £2665. The occupations of the men include mining, farming, tailoring, and general labouring. A large number of the third class passengers were wives and children coming out to their breadwinners. THE LAND HUNGER. Hastings, Saturday. The land ballot, yesterday revealed the extent of the land hunger in Hawke's Bay . For the Matapiro block of 538 acres, ninety-four applications wert lodged. Of these the board considered twenty-three ineligible, leaving seventyone to go to the ballot* for one section. DUNEDIN COMPETITIONS. Dunedin, Saturday. The Dunedin Competitions Society's takings were not quite equal to last year's record, owing to only two choirs competing on Thursday, when there was a big shrinkage. The competitions, however, show a reasonable surplus. PLUNKET MEDAL FOR ORATORY. Wellington, Last Night. The Piunket medal for oratory, competed for by members of the Victoria College Debating Society, was won by Mr. M. H. Oram. The competition took place last evening, and his Excellency the Governor presented the medal to the winner.
