An interesting new departure constituted the first Commonwealth-owned "overseas" shipping company was announced in London at the end of July. The new enterprise is the Merchants and Shippers' Steamship- Line, which lias been formed to run several fast cargo steamers, together with especially large and up-to-date refrigerators and space for all classes of perishable goods. The line is to operate to and from Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand to America, Canada and Great Britain. The fleet ■will be comprised of five large steel steamers, and will maintain regular monthly sailings. The plans and specifications provide that they will be among the best and most up-to-date cargo steamers trading to the Southern Hemisphere, and will be on a par with the inter-State steamers at present engaged on Australia's coast. They will be owned and managed in Australia. The steamer now being built on the Clyde for the Maoriland Steamship Company to replace the Lauderdale, will carry 2200 tons dead weight on a , draught of 16ft >6in, and will steam about ten knots an hour when loaded. , OVERSEA VESSELS. | FOR WELLINGTON.
