The Pope has issued an encyclical enumerating the measures taken against the growth of modernism, and instructing bishops and rectors of colleges to watch the formation of the young clergy, 'and to forbid them to read newspapers and periodicals. All professors and priests will be compelled on appointment to take an oath of loyalty to the head of the Catholic doctrine and discipline. A large proportion of the French I clergy believe it impossible to make--a child of seven understand the difference i between communion bread and ordinary i bread.
