In the House of Representatives, the Minister for Defence, in reply to a question, stated that under the present break gauge conditions it would take sixtythree days to transport thirty thousand mounted men and their equipment from Brisbane to Melbourne. With a uniform gauge it would take only twenty-three and three-quarter days. LAND TAX DEBATE. Received September 10, 1.5 a.m. Melbourne, September 9. The land Tax debate is making slow progress, and has been adjourned till Tuesday.
