Russell and Hutchinson announced the discovery of a micro organism which destroys the,bacteria essential to the fertility of the soil. Untreated soil contains 6,000,000 bacteria per gramme. After treatment there are often 60/100,000. Such an antiseptic as toluene kills the micro organism. Dr. A. D. Hall, president of the section, described the discovery as the most noteworthy since the fixation of nitrogen.
