PIRAKI HOUSE BURNED
HISTORICAL LANDMARK DISAPPEARS. By Telegraph. —Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. An historical landmark of early Canterbury in the shape of Piraki House, Piraki (one of the first whaling stations in New Zealand), was completely destroyed by lire on Saturday. The outbreak was discovered at 0.20 p.m., The flames being seen issuing from the upstairs portion. The fire is supposed to have been caused by a defective chimney. No appliances being available, the fire could not be got under, and in about 15 minutes the house was a mass of charred ruins. Piraki House was occupied by Mr. A. P. Robinson, wlio leased it from Mr. F. A. Anson. Mr. Robinson is a heavy loser, as in addition to other valuables, he lost a number of costly wedding presents. The building was insured for £4OO in the Victoria Office, and the furniture for £3OO in the London, Liverpool and Globe Office.
