LASCAR SEAMEN
REPRESENTATIONS TO THE PREMIER. | By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Monday. Tile subject of the competition between the P. and 0. Company and the Union Company and Huddart-Parker Company on the New Zealand and Australian. line was the subject of a deputation to. the Prime Minister from the Merchant Service Guild to-day. The principal objection to outside companieb coming nto the trade was that their vessels were manned by Lascars at such email wages that competition was rendered very difficult. The deputation urged that something should be done, in the way of legislation to make it compulsory for all ships on this way to conform to local conditions, etc. Sir Joseph Ward, in rcplv, pointed out that the difficulties in the way of passing legislation and having it assented to by the Imperial Government, wore very great, but he promised to go very carefully into the whole matter and to see if some way out of the difficulty could not be devised. In answer to a question, he said it was possible the matter would be brought up before the next Imperial Conference.
