DEVASTATION IX OTAGO. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night The country surrounding Mount Royal estate was swept by fire last night. All the fences on Mr. C. M. Brooks' property were destroyed, and it is feared that his sheep have 'been lost. The homestead is intact. The extent of the damage is not vet known, but it is believed to be heavy. There was a tremendous glare in the western sky, and the sight from Palmerston was a magnificent one. A thousand acres have been swept by fire, and all the late improvements on Mr. Broods' farm were destroyed. Mr. Brooks lost over 150 sheep, and the Mount Royal estate fifty. The fencing at the back of the latter estate was utterly destroyed, and twenty-three men were fighting the blaze all niorninn- before it was got under control.
