ALLEGED SLANDER CASE SETTLED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Wednesday. The case in which M. J. Reardon, secretary-general of the Labourers' Union, claimed £GOI damages fpr alleged slander from Robert Hogg, a member of the New Zealand Socialist Party, will not come on for trial. A statement was made in court to-day that certain remarks by Hogg referred solely to 'book-keeping methods and there was no intention to impute anything dishonourable to Reardon. The explanation was accepted.
ACTION AGAINST A SURGEON. Auckland, Wednesday. Mr. Justice Edwards and a special jury heard a. claim by Olga Falson for £IOO damages from Dr. Hardie Neil, a member of the honorary staff of the hospital for alleged unskilful treatment, alleging that while removing stitches used in a throat operation defendant negligently and unskilfully cut out plaintiff's uvula. The defence was that the uvula was not removed at the first operation but at the second operation performed for this purpose, and that any act defendant performed was perfectly justifiable. The jury found a verdict for defendant. The judge allowed costs according to scale.
