PROGRESS OF PALMERSTON. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston N., Last Night. A meeting of ratepayers to-night endorsed the proposals to raise £2OOO for swimming baths, and £SOOO foi libraries and" a museum.
DUTSTEDIN COMPETITIONS.. " Dunedin, Wednesday. The ninth annual festival, held under the auspices of the Dunedin Competitions Society, opened to-day under favourable circumstances. The number ot entries this year shows a falling off, being 1050 as against 1184 last year. The judges are Mr. W. L. 'Paine (Melbourne), elocution, and 'Professor Ives (Melbourne), music and singing. The attendances at to-day's sessions were very encouraging. Results Humorous recitation (gentlemen), J. A. Devereaux (Christchurch) 1; D. J. Millar 2; prepared speech, D. H. Benton (Masterton) 1. T. J. Laffev (Dunedin) 2; F. B. Slyfield (Dunetliii) 3; soprano solo, Miss Daisv Hall (High Cliff) 1; Miss May Walton (Durtedin) 2; tenor solo, W. H. Ashcroft (Dunedin) 1; D. Lyons (Dunedin) 2: H. Richards (Invercargill) 3. The Dunedin competitions were continued to-day. The attendance was very satisfactory, the takings being double those of the corresponding day last year. PREVENTION OF CRUELTY. Wellington, August.3l. The conference of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals decided not to ask for a Government subsidy. It wae decided to ask the Government to allocate to the funds of local societies lines inflicted in Court for cruelty to animals. After, discussion of -the Jewish methods of slaughtering, it was decided to recommend the Government to enquire whether the stunning of cattle should be permitted in New Zealand abattoirs ns against the practice of "pithing."
