POLITICAL NEWS AND NOTES
NORTHERN PETITIONS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent). Wellington, Last Xi<sht. Of to-day's paper the one thing notable is the big petitions of the Aucklanders for more railways up in the far north among 'the gum fields atK i the kauri forests and the Auckland native lands. There are 1471 signatures spread over ninety heavy sheets. MILK OH!
In the Council the only matter was ] the motion of Dr. Collins for improving tlie control of the milk supply of the big towns. One felt the difficulties of the subject, shrouded by the shoals of scientific testimony on the awful bacilluscarrying power of the universal morning liquid. The worst is that all this strikes the infants; .but what can be done seems a little in the clouds. The Council is going to have a "go-in," nevertheless. THE MATCH-MAKERS. They read the Bill against "phossy jaw" a second time, and will do the rest next sitting day. There will, after 1913, be nothing ibut safety matches in this Dominion. It will he a bore undoubtedly. All the nasty little match-boxes we carry, including presentation ones, will go out of business. There is a rav of hope, however. The Attorney-Gen-eral said that science is making an effort, which, will probably be successful, to make a match .without phosphorous, which will strike anywhere. There is time for this invention to materialise. Another Bill was read a second time, for reviving all company debentures which, under the present law, according to a recent English decision, perish on hypothecation.
