' The newspaper Scotsman says tine land companies in London and Edinburgh are keenly apprehensive of Mr. Fisher's Bill in antipathy to the squatters. It continues: "The Labor Government is hitting heavily, and is offensive to the useful British investor. Mortgage companies in New Zealand and Australia are faced with .exactions wMch. must react on Australian credit. It is unfortunate that the Commonwealth Opposition is weak. The Senate may become a ereature of the caucus, and a period of much uncertainty lies ahead."
PRESERVING PLUMAGE BIRDS. Received August 29, 10.30 p.m. Melbourne, August 29. A deputation of ornithologists asked Mr. R & Tudor, Minister for Trade and Customs, to stop the importation and exportation of plumage wfld -wirds. Particular stress was laid on the value of birds to agriculturists. The deputation suggested that women's heads were naturally so beautiful that they did not require any covering. Mr. Tudor was in entire sympathy, and said that something should be done to prevent the wholesale murder of the valuable native birds. He would ascertain the extent of his power, and act up to it.
