TEACHERS' SUPERANNUATION
DEPUTATION TO THE MINISTER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Friday. A deputation consisting erf Messrs. Malcolm, iPoole, Arnold. Clark, and Hall, M.P.'s., waited o; .lie Minister of 'Education this morning, and requested that a number of teachers, who were unable to join the superannuation fund when it was inaugurated, should be allowed to. do so upon payment of contributions from the inception oi the fund with interest.
The Minister replying, s.nid that if the request were granted, it coukl only be for those eligible to join the fund in 1906 who did not do so. Legislation would be required before the fund could be re-opened. He pointed out that the teachers referred to by the deputation had had six months time in which to join the' fund, and had failed to do so. Power had been given the board to agree to admitting teachers-on such terms as were thought fit—if the applicants were of sound health on payment of the premiums plus interest at the rate the fund was earning. There was a danger of teachers discovering latent disease and wishing to join to tire detriment of the fund. The Government was very much opposed to .the re-open-ing of superannuation funds. The State would have to support the funds out of public money, and it was impossible to keep on opening tlie funds indefinitely. He was afraid that the chances of his being able to agree to the request were very remote.
