LABOR AND SOCIALISM
THE RECENT ALLIANCE. By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright Received August 26, 9.55 p.m. London, August 28. A majority of the members of the Council of the Independent Labor Party have issued a manifesto, in which they describe as honest and honorable the alliance 'between the trade unionists and Socialists. As such the alliance has advantages', some less advanced than others, but the advantages are overwhelming. The manifesto continues: —"The alliance is the greatest thing done in Britain towards federating the workers and enabling them to use their political power to secure economic redress. Socialism ha® mad© big strides, and is now more definitely constructive. As such it will emibody itself in every extension of public ownership, State regulation of industry and every law curtailing; greed, and, at the same time, in the increasing of human happiness and freedom. A co-operative Commonwealth is our goal, but it will only be realised by patient plodding, and not noise. The Party, when supporting reforms, is told that it is sacrificing its independence. This is a foolish and shallow charge, because Liberals and Tories will offer reforms! as an alternative to Socialism. We accept them as an essential preliminary to Socialism. We are not satisfied ■with the present rate of progress, and desire it to be greatly accelerated."
