BREACH OF LICENSING ACT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Thursday. At Paeroa, Edward M'Mahon, was charged with having unlawfully sold liquor in the no-license district of Ohinemuri. It was shown that defendant received large quantities of ihjuor. The defence was that M'Mahon had twenty-five to thirty boarders ; all cap-j able of drinking a fair quantity of; beer. Each man had a locker, and each man kept his own key, but they were accustomed to lend beer to friends 88 supplies ran out. It was alleged that all the benefit M'Mahon got for the use of the room was the sale of ,empty bottles and sixpence a week from each, man using a locker. Mr. Burgess, S.M., convicted and fined M'Mahon £SO ajadj costs. - I
THEFT OF JEWELLERY. Wellington, Last Nignt. | A married woman named Winnie Kiffin Thomas pleaded guilty in the Magis- i trate's Court of the theft of two rings and a brooch, valued at £l7, froin a woman at whose house she had been living Chief Detective Broberg said ac-, cused had been here some months. Herj husband was a solicitor in Western Aus-j tralia. It was alleged she had Wen, living a life of ill fame here, and that a number of cqmplaints had been made! against her, though there had been no previous convictions. Accused was re-| manded for sentence. MAORI BURGLAR COMMITTED, j Rotorua, Last Night, j In the Magistrate's Court this afternoon, Te Hua Hori Ngarae, a Maori, was committed to the- Supreme Court fori sentence on a charge of breaking, en-| tering and theft from the residence of I J. W. Wrigley. The offence was committed yesterday morning, the police making a smart capture. _ The property stolen consisted of foreign coins, defaced coins, and ancient copper coins.
