Convenient railway arrangements have ueen , made for country visitors. Tlie Wellington men, in charge 01 Mr. J. Sweeney as manager, arrived from Auckland by last night's express, and put up at the Criterion Hotel. They were met by Messrs. F. X. lyeilrmger (president), J. McLeod and J. Clarke (members of the management committee) of -the Taranaki Rugby Union. After tea, they were officially welcomed! by Mr. Bellringer, on beh.aU of tlie Union, who remarked that those who had visited Wellington with Taranaki Heams had lively recollections of the v§rv hospitable manner in which the Wellington Union had entertained taem, and Taranal.i was glad of the opportunity to return the compliment. The very best relations had always between Wellington and Taranaki, and they knew that the game on Thursday, whilst it might he a hard one, w-uuld be a clean pne, and "may the k '.ter team win."
Mr. Sweeney briefly acknowledged the compliment and thanked the Taranaki Rugby Union for the hearty welcome. He was sure they would enjoy their stay. No doubt the game would be a strenuous one, but they all hoped to see the better team win. The Wellington Rugby Union would do all in their power to make the Taranaki team's next visit to Wellington an enjoyaible one.
THE WELLINGTON TEAM. The Wellington team was selected last night as follows: — Full back: Evenson. Three-quarters: Mit'chinson Ryan Dawsoa. Five-eighths: McLeod Kinvig Half: Roberts , Wing-forward: Avery Forwards: Bruce Moffatt Perry Rapson Leahy Eliot Irvine (front row). TARANAKI. Full back: {McLeod , Three-quarters: Cameron Stolir Five-eighths: Mynott Dive Half: Brown Wing-forward: Taylor Forwards: Whittington Tamu Martin Smith Pini Cain Osborne (front row). The visitors gave the Califonilan Universities' cry "Give 'em the a.-e/' and drank the health of the local union in bumpers. The Wellington tefwn will hold a practice this morning. In the afternoon they will ibe taken for a drive towards Oakura, visiting the oil wells at Moturoa en route. , An official programme will be sold on the grounds, compiled and issuer oy che Rugby Union. The net proceeds will: be devoted, to the Bayly Memorial Schol-j arship fund. The following members of the l'ara-j naki team have arrived in town: Cam-' eron, McLeod; Martin, Whittington, Roberts, and Cain, and the emergency D. Moir. ■ Others are expected by this morning's train. The team will assemble. at the ■ Red House Hotel at 3 o'clock 1 tliis afternoon for practice. _ _ | The Recreation Sports 'Ground is in capital order, and even the cricket pitch 1 is drying well. At time of writing the sky is clear and the air frosty. If this weather continues the ground will be fit for a very fast game. Both teams are exceptionally strong in the backs, and a bright, open game should be wit-i nessed; in fact, it promises to one of J the ibest matches seen here in recent years
HOROWHENUA v. HAWKE'S BAY. By Telegraph—Press.Association. Levin, Last Night. The Horowhenua Rugby representatives met Hawke's Bay at Levin to-day, the result being a draw. Though not consistently good, the game was marked by some fast open play, and was contested in excellent spirit. Hawke's,x.-ay scored two tries against one try and a penalty goal.
