Mr. R. Pigott has been appointed judge for the Taranaki Jockey Club's Christmas meeting. The appointment of Messrs. Andrew Kelly and Walter Jones as members of the Mokau River Trust is gazetted. A Melbourne cablegram reports the <k.uh of George Palmer, a well-known Australian cricketer, as the result of pneumonia.

For some little time past the condition of Mr. A. Hood's health has occasioned his friends some enxiety. The old gentleman is nearly 1)0 years of age and is one of the fast diminishing band of pioneer settlers of Taranaki. Mr. F. Barton, B-A, of Dunedin, has been selected to take charge of the secondary department of the Wanganui District High School, in succession to Mr. J. Rutherford, M.A., who has been appointed to the headinastership of the Palmerston South District High School. Mr. Henry Gilfillan, an old and respected resident of Auckland, died on Sunday, at the age of eighty-three. Tie deceased was one of Auckland's early settlers, having arrived in the 'fifties. He was engaged in business for many years as a merchant, finally retiring a few years ago. Deceased leaves a family of five daughters and two sons. The sons are Mr. Bruce Gilfillan, of the Guardian Insurance Company, and Mr. E. G. Gilfillan, of the New Zealand Insurance Company.

The Rev. Father o*Meara, parish priest at Feilding, died in the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Auckland, on Monday. He had gone to the northern city for the benefit of his health. Father O'Meara, who was for a time attached to the Sacred Heart Basilica, Hill street. Wellington, was aibout fifty years of age. He received his education at Enmis and Carlow Collides, ana atrived in New Zealand twenty-two years ago. Before going to Feilding he'had been stationed at Hawera, Masterton, and Wellington. The interment will take place at Feilding.
