! Mr. Joseph Palmers, for upward* of forty years a well-known figure in Christohurch, died yesterday, aged til years. He was the first manager of the Union Bank in ChrLsitehurch, then becoming inspector, and latterly was a local director. Mr. W. M. Phillips, a pioneer settler, died on Tuesday, aged 91 years. He had lived in New Zealand about 61 years, and experienced his full share of the vicissitudes of the early colonising days. As a young man he worked in the clerical department of Rothschild, of hanking fame, and emigrated for health reasons. By the lost 'English mail, Mrs. Trask, Nelson, received many messages of condolence on the death of the late Hon. F. Trask, M.L.C., including letters from Lord Ranfurly and Lord Onslow (former of New Zealand), who were personal friends of the family. Mrs. Trask also received an acknowledgment (from Queen Alexandra of a message of sympathy forwarded by her on the death of his late Majesty.
