LATE FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE
Mrs. Evans, the lessee of Hawera railway refreshment rooms, now in her seventy-eighth year, was under the late Florence Nightingale at Scutari in 1854. A Star reporter went to see Mrs. Evans with a view to getting her recollections about the celebrated lady. Owing to indisposition Mrs. Evans was" unable to give an interview, but on a previous occasion "Granny" spoke enthusiastically of the splendid work carried out j>y Florence Nightingale. Another old resident of Hawera, in the person of Mrs. E. Kelly, of Erin street, was over at the seat of war at the same time as Florence Nightingale. Seen by a reporter, Mrs. Kelly said she was only at Scutari, the headquarters of the nurses, for about twenty-four hours, and therefore had not much personal knowledge. Sihe had, however, a keen remembrance of the enthusiasm her work created. Mr. Kelly, husband of Mrs. Kelly, informed the interviewer that he was in the Scutari Hospital three months, having been wounded in one of the engagements. He said Miss Nightingale was as nice a woman as even a man spoke to, and the soldiers loved her.
