BISCUIT FACTORY DESTROYED

HEAVY LOSS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, Wednesday.

A disastrous, fire occurred at the Southern Cross Biscuit Company's premises this morning whereby the wnole factory and contents were destroyed, including buildings comprising the bread, biscuit, and confectionery departments, 100 feet by 35 leet, *iore department 1 , 30 feet by 60 feet, aao. uox department, 30 feet by 20 feet, the two former being two'storied buildings of galvanised iron. The fire started m the rear ot the factory, near the bread department, and, aided by a strong wind, soon enveloped the whole buildings. There was poor pressure in the mains, owing to their being "dead ends," and only the arrival of the fire engine saved the flour mill adjoining. Fears were entertained of the fire spreading to the tram car power house and sheds adjoining, and the cars were run out into the open, but the Only damage was a cable slightly scorched and a switch-board soaked with water. The insurances total £7775, including £2OOO on the mill (uninjured).
