FARM AND DAIRY.

THE PORK AND BACON INDUSTRY.

At the annual meeting of the Eltham Co-operative Dairy Co. on Saturday last, the chairman moved—"That this company is favorable to taking up the bacon industry in conjunction with other companies on co-operatives lines similar to those on which the Patea Freezing Works and the Box Co. are run." He stated that suoh a scheme had already been endorsed by the shareholders of the Mangatoki and Kaponga Dairy Companies. He mentioned that last year when farmers were only getting 3d per pound for their pigs the Eltham Bacon Co. had been offered 4%d per pound for 401) pigs for export; but that the company had to refuse the order as they could not guarantee the number of pigs. If the bacon industry were taken up through the dairy factories, shareholders would get everything that was in the trade and nothing more. They would only pay out on the actual results for the year. It would then be to the direct interest of all the shareholders to supply their pigs to their own bacon company. If a co-operative company were formed, backed by such companies as the Eltham, Mangatoki and Kaponga ■Dairy Companies, they would have sufficient capital behind them to deal with the whole of the output of pigs in Taranaki.

Mr. F. J. Hodgson seconded the motion.

In answer to a question, thee hairman said it was a wrong idea to suppose that if such a company were formed that they would take over the liabilities of the Eltham Bacon Company. If it suited them they could buy the Eltham Bacon Company's propertly, but if they could not come to terms they would be at liberty to build a new factory if they wished to.

On being put to the meeting the motion was lost by one vote. The chairman stated that the matter could be brought up again at another meeting.
