A STEAMER AGROUND. Adelaide, August 17. The Adelaide Steam Ship Company's steamer Investigator is aground on the rocks at Port Elizabeth. She is badly damaged. The engine-room is flooded, and she will become a total wreck. NAVAL ARCHITECTURE. Sydney, August 17. ■ A lectureship in uavai lucniteciure and marine engineering is to be established at Sydney University. WIRELESS TELEGRAPHY. August 17. Already there are twenty-uve steamers in Australian trade fitted with wireless telegraphy.
CRUSHED IN A LIFT. Melbourne, August 17. Jondescherski, one of the famous musical acrobats appearing at the Gadety Theatre, was crushed to death in a lift at the Palace Hotel.
FIRE AT BRISBANE. Brisbane, August 17. Fire seriously damaged t'fte Federal Chambers in Queen Street. The premises of Several tenants were burned out or seriously injured. The damage is not stated.
SUN SPOTS.
Melbourne, August 17,
The Federal Meteorologist, referring to the sun spot theory of weather forecasting, declared that Australia would have periods of drought, but tijere was absolutely no justification by the past experience of sun spot cycles to take a pessimistic view of the immediate or distant future. . ;
ACCOUNTANT SENTENCED. :. Perth, August 17. Black, an accountant, was found guilty on charges of stealing three sums of £3O each, the property of h is late employers, 'Fireeman Bros. The judge, in summing-up, expressed regret that men's reputations had been assailed without justification. He knew no evidence tp show that the Freemans were other than honest men. He sentenced Black to five vears' hard labour.
