| CRUDE OIL FOR THE RAILWAYS. | 'The Taranaki Petroleum Company yes terday received its first order from th( Government for fifty barrels of crude oil with a view of testing its value as £ue on the railways. iNo. 3 bore continued very active all day yesterday, quite as much so as or the previous day. The gas was greatlj in evidence,, and nearly overpowered the men. It was with difficulty that thej were able to remain. The bursts were tremendous, oil, water and silt being thjrown out at intervals, and lasting for ten minutes at a time. A fair quantity of oil was noticeable in the liquid expelled from the bore. At present all that can be done is to keep the sand pump going, so that silt may be kept from accumulating in the well. When the activity subsides sufficiently, a further quantity of the 4-inch casing will be put in to protect the 800 feet which at present has no casing. Unless it proves that this is a very valuable vein, boring will be continued to a greater depth.
