Mr. G. V. Tate, who is suffering from pneumonia, was reported yesterday to be slightly, better. Mr. E. Maxwell, of Oaonui, is at present indisposed, and is in.a private hospital in New Plymouth. Miss McAllum, who was recently appointed staff nurse at the New Plymouth Hospital, has resigned her appointment, i Our Wellington correspondent wires that Sir J. G. Ward, who has been ill, returned to the House yesterday after-, noon. ''
J The names of Miss D. Mildred Brake, of Toko, and Miss Dora P. James, of 'iDevonport, Auckland, have been placed on the list.of probationers at the local hospital. I ' Mr. Alfred Jordan, draught champion of 'England, who is now making a tour of the North Island, will visit New Plymouth at an early date. Arrangements are ibeing made for exhibitions of chess and draught playing by the champion while on his visit here. 1 Mrs. P. B. Fitzherbert, of Dannevirke, who ds at present visiting New Ply-| .mouth, has been attacked by appendi- ' citis. Mr. Fitzherbert, who had been recruiting his health at New Plymouth, returned to his home last week, having (derived considerable improvement from . the change. I I . Deare, E. Gilmour and W. F. McAllum. Mr. Lawrence E- Reade, solicitor, of J Foxton, who fell from a tram car in Wellington on July 4, died in the Wei-! lington 'Hospital yesterday morning. He; was sixty-three years of age. An opera-, tion on Monday disclosed an abscess on the brain, presumably the result of thej fall from the car. Deceased was born in India and was a nephew of Charles, Reade, the novelist. He had lived in ,Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, Feilding and Foxton. In his younger days he ' played for Otago and Canterbury in representative cricket. He was also a well- , known oarsman and tennis player. One of his sons is in the Railway Department, another is editor of the New Zealand Graphic, and a. third son is a contractor at Havelock, Marlborough.
