BITES HIS YOUNG LADY'S NOSE. POLICE COURT PROCEEDINGS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. George Mitchell, a young man, was charged at the Police Court to-day that he did on the 14th inst. assault a female, viz., Adelaide Mills, by biting her on the nose.
Mr. Hackett (for defendant) said he understood the girl did not want .he case instituted. The young man was her lover,.and they were having, iw he said, a bit of a "sniooilge," when instead of kissing her he accidentally gave ner a nip on the nose. The girl wanted the case withdrawn.
Sub-Inspector Hendry: That's so. I| don't. It is a brutal assault. I iu»ve ■ got plenty of evidence of what took I place. | ' Evidence was given by the young that the accused came to her house on> Sunday night to see her. They had aj little bit of trouble over a misunderstanding about a letter, and accused held her head back and bit her nose. Cross-examined: Witness did ;iot think the accused would hurt her intentionally. "If the police are going to interest themselves in every lovers' quarrel," said Mr. Hackett, "then I submit their hands are going to be full for quite a long time." The accused swore that lie had no intention of injuring the girl. The Bench was satisfied that an as-1 sault had been committed. It. was evi- ( dent the girl was sheltering the young' fellow, and sympathised with her.| On every count the case was proved. A line of £2 and costs with an alternative of a month's imprisonment was imposed. The sequel to the case was that the young lady produced the money to pay the fine.
