Barnes, speaking at Glas- j gow, said he was not optimistic regard-, ino- the Parliamentary conference. Every delay weakened the democratic forces opposed to the Lords. He would be ready to pay handsomely to maintain the Crown, but the tremendous abuse of the civil list gave too many people a chance to fatten upon the working men, the sinecurists hiding themselves in the shadow of the Throne. Trades unions, Mr. Barnes added, would not be satisfied until the Osborne judgment was reversed.
