WAITARA NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) At a meeting of the North Taranaki Ploughing Association held on, Saturday, the rides and programme submitted by the sub-committee were adopted. It was decided to empower the committee to appoint the judges, and to entertain the competitors at a dinner on the evening of the competition, September 8. A meeting of the Horticultural Society was to be held last evening. The Waitara Rifles are holding their annual ball on Thursday evening. Two properties in the business block changed hands on Saturday at very decent prices. It is .reported that the police made a raid on Sunday with the result that a'| number of men "who should not have been on the premises" were louiid there, and no doubt the S.M. will be called on to say a few words on the subject. Those who pay for use of a private box at the Post Office find that the key of the door is applied as promptly as it! should be in a licensed house—lQ o'clock, I and very often such promptness is not appreciated, for the reason that many public meetings are not over till that, time or soon after, when much to thej annoyance of many the door is locked. Why we should be tied up to such an early closing hour is a matter that requires explaining, and an effort should be made to leave the lobby open until 11 o'clock. It is time also that the public made an effort to have a new Post Office erected, for the present structure is quite inadequate, and' should be replaced by a good substantial brick building. The bureau office should also be made a little more private iflian at present, when conversation by any-| one using it can be heard outside. The Bowling Club are holding their usual euchre party and dance this evening.
