STRATFORD DAY BY DAY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night. As a result of the representations ot the Chamber of Commerce, the secretary has received word from the District Traflic Managor that from September (sth, the 6.45 a.m. train from Te Wera to Stratford and the 10.30 a.m. train from Stratford to Te Wera will run on Tuesdays instead of Wednesdays. This will mean that the settlers from the back country will i be able to come into stock sales on the one day. The Rev. W. A. Butler was inducted as vicar of the Holy Trinity Church yesterday morning. A case of scarlet fever has bees reported in the borough. Ward has been received in Stratford of the death of Mr. A. Aitken, ait one time a resident of this district. Deceased was a son-in-law oi j. s, Tirrawn, of Ngaisre.

The conference between the Borougii Council and the Electric Light Company will take place on Friday evening. Mr.. W. Morris, who left this morning for Melbourne, was presented on Saturday evening: with a case of pipes by the local Oddfellows Lodge. Business people are not altogether enamoured o£ the date fixed for the A. and P. Association's first show. They contend that it is too near Xmas, and from a business point of view, is of very little use to them. The general opinion is that an autumn show, to have been held in February, would have suited the townspeople a great deal better and would also have benefited the society in that there would have been a larger attendance.

Authorities all agree that' one of the best methods of training for football is short sprints. One of the lorwaras of the local team, which will meet Waimate on Thursday, should be in great form, for the other evening in the course of his training, 'lie caine across a jersey bull. The animal showed an antipathy to the red and black jersey and die footballer, without wasting any time in considering the position, made for the nearest fence. It is said that he showed

i turn of speed which should justify his inclusion amongst tlie fliers who constitute the Taranaki three-quarter line. Local residents are wondering If the efforts of the Rugby Union to secure the acceleration of the speed of the afternoon train on Thursday so that it will reach Klfham at three o'clock instead of three thirty,, will be successful. If such could be done, it will be a great convenience for all the public of North Taranaki who desire to witness the "playoff match" for the championship of the province.
