TRAIN COLLISION IN FRANCE
A TERRIBLE PANIC. THIRTY-SEVEN' KILLED. MANY SERIOUSLY INJURED. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Paris, August 14.
- A Sunday excursion train from Bordeau, with 1100 passengers, dashed into a goods train at a speed of forty miles an hour.
The two front carriages, containing thirty-two young, ladies from a boarding school, were reduced to splinters, and six others were telescoped. Fifty-five were seriously injured: Received August 15, 9 p.m. (Paris, August 15.
A goods train from Royan overran the signals at Saujon, where a double line becomes a single line, and' caught an excursion train which was passing the points. The collision was cannon-like. A terrible panic ensued among the passengers. Upon the Saujon platform were'excursionists, including' many sportsmen, who were going to the Royan races.
One of the carriages contained girls belonging to the Bordeaux Religious Association, who were going to Royan to celebrate the Feast of Assumption. Eight of them were killed and others terribly injured. In four of the carriages were school girls from Barsac, who were going to speud the day on the seashore. Six of these were killed.
Altogether thirty-seven were killed, it taking seven hours to lay out the dead in rows.
