HELP FOR WHITEHAVEN SUFFERERS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Westport, Friday. Westport's contribution of £94 to the Whitehaven (England) disaster fund has been paid into the public'account for transfer to the High Commissioner The Coal Miners' Unions in this district forwarded their substantial contributions direct.

Mr. Scott, secretary of the South Island Dairy Association, states that replies for the association's m;n«ae lor concentrating the output in the hands of the association are eminently satisfactory so far. Palmerston North, Last Night. At the last North Island band contest, held in Wangunui, the North Island Brass Band Association decided that the next contest would he held at Palmerston This evening a largely attended meeting of townspeople decided that the contest be held in February on the Show Ground, if possible. The prize money has not vet been fixed, but probably it will be the same as at the Wanganui contest last year. A HAfISTDSOME GIFT. At a meeting of the Society for the Health of Women and Children to-day, a letter was. received from Mrs. Harris, conveying an otter by Mr. Wolf Harris to give the Society premises and an estate at Anderson's Bay, constituting a Karitane Baby Hospital, and to effect certain improvements in connection witn the grounds and buildings. The donor expressed the hope that the institution should serve as a practical teaching centre for matters bearing on the welfare of mother and child, and will be extended and further systematised. It was decided to convey the Society's hearty thanks to the d'onor.
