NO ROAD ACCESS.

APPEALS FROM BACKBLOCKQ SETTLERS. Two appeals from unhappy selctors in the Taranaki hinterland for road awss came before the Board of School Con:misisoners yesterday. The first was Mr. Jarvis, who wrote from Kotare. He tok up one of the Commissioners' leaseholds about a year ago, described on the map as section 1, block 7, Waro. It is one matter to define the boundaries of a section on the map, ibut quite another to reach it. Mr. Jarvis has already felled 105 acres of bush, and lias grassed it. He had to carry in seed and stores himself, and now he wants to get some young cattle on the clearing, but he says he cant carry them up. "that hill." The secretary had, upon receipt of the letter, written to the District Engineer of ißoads, and his reply was to the effect, that it would be some time before even a bridle track could be made to the holding, for either by way of Kotare or Witianga there would be three miles to do, at a cost of about £3OOO. He thought the best thing would be for Mr. Jarvis to cut a ridge track himself, obtaining permission to traverse a neighboring property. The second complaint came from Mr. T. >E. tActwood, of Okau, who holds a lease from the Board of section 3, block 5, Mimi. He is living on the section with his wife and six children for a year, has 80 acres in grass, and a fair amount of fencing done. But he has no way of crossing the Mangatoro stream ] other than by using a log, and sheep and cattle cannot be forded across on account of the bottom of the stream being muddy. He asked the Commissioners to meet him half way in the construction of a bridge. It was explained that the river van along Mr. Aetwood's frontage, between his property and the road. The Board, however, regretted it. could not find funds for bridging. Upon the motion of Messrs Major and Wade, it was decided to place the circumstances of these cases before the Hon. 'Minister of 'Roads, and to request some assistance.
