DISTRICT NEWS.

'EGMONT VILLAGE. (Fron Our Own Correspondent.) The fortnightly meeting of the Mutual Improvement (Society was held on Thursday evening. There were 22 members present. Mr. George Marsh occupied the ohair. The programme for the evening was a debate on the question: "Should the black races have equal rights with the white?" Mr. A. Morton opened in the affirmative, followed by Mr. C; M. Inman in the negative. Mr. Currie, who was to have seconded Mr. Morton, was unable to attend, and Mr. Foster filled the vacancy, Mr. Dewhirst seconding Mr. Inman. A most interesting debate resulted, the negative side gaining the vote by 14 to 8.

Messrs J. Gibson and R. Irvine returned on Saturday from a visit to Australia. Mr. C. M. Inman has taken a contract for 20 acres of stumping for Mr. A. Morton. I understand that he intends to procure a stumping battery with Which to carry out the work. If so, it will be the first of its kind to be put into use in the district. The cows are beginning to "comes in" already, and the milk supply is steadily on the increase at the local creamery. The winter has been particularly mild, and all indications point towards an early spring and a particularly prosperous season.

Mr: Scott, who for the past season has occupied Mr. F. ; Hosking's farm,on the Junction road, removed last week' to his new quarters on the Lower Upland road. Mr. Hoskings, I understand, intends to occupy the farm himself during the ensuing season. Mr. Carter, of Mangatoki, has been appointed manager at the local creamery, and takes possession very shortly. I understand that the house will be repainted before 'he enters.
